Lethal freeze-dehydration injury of dogwood stem tissue does not change the activation energy of water permeability.

چکیده
The Arrhenius activation energy for water permeability, (DeltaE(a,H(2)O)) through stem cortical tissue of red osier dogwood (Cornus sericea L.) was determined after treatments which cause membrane rupture as well as after a lethal slow freeze and subsequent slow rewarming. The latter value was higher than the former, but was indistinguishable from the DeltaE(a,H(2)O) found for healthy tissue. It was concluded that membrane permeability to water is not altered during the first 24 to 48 hours after exposure of nonacclimated red osier dogwood to lethal freeze dehydration injury.

Novel plasmodesmata association of dehydrin-like proteins in cold- acclimated Red-osier dogwood (Cornus sericea).
Dehydrins are proteins associated with conditions affecting the water status of plant cells, such as drought, salinity, freezing and seed maturation. Although the function of dehydrins remains unknown, it is hypothesized that they stabilize membranes and macromolecules during cellular dehydration. Red-osier dogwood (Cornus sericea L.), an extremely freeze-tolerant woody plant, accumulates dehyd...
متن کاملAn Improved Test to Study the Changes in Membrane Permeability During Rehydration of Freeze-Dried Weissella paramesenteroides LC11
The objective of this study was to assess changes in membrane permeability during rehydration of freeze-dried Weissella paramesenteroides LC11. Viability was assessed using the electrical conductivity measurement (ms cm -1 g -1 dry weight) and the plate count method (cfu g -1 dry weight). The symptoms of injury included an increase in the electrolyte leakage during the first 4 h of rehydration ...
متن کاملFREEZING RESPONSE AND POST FREEZE DIFFERENTIATION POTENTIAL OF HUMAN ADIPOSE DERIVED ADULT STEM CELL (huASCs)
This study presents volumetric shrinkage (water transport) during freezing of human adipose derived adult stem stem cells (huASCs) using a calorimetric technique in the presence and absence of cryoprotective agents (CPAs). By fitting a model of water transport to the experimentally obtained volumetric shrinkage data we determined the membrane permeability parameters (reference membrane permeabi...
متن کاملDehydration, water fluxes, and permeability of tobacco leaf tissue.
Removal of the lower epidermis from a tobacco leaf allows a faster and wider range of water fluxes, without damaging the mesophyll. It also permits a more direct examination of the photosynthetic potential of the tissue at various levels of hydration. The rehydration rate of leaf discs is essentially linear. It decreases with leaf age and is correlated with the rate of dehydration, but it is ind...
متن کاملChanges in Membrane Permeability of Winter Wheat Cells
Nuclear etic resoaace (NMR) relaxation times were studied in acclhnated and nonacclmated Kharkov winter wheat (Tritlum sestlvwm L.) crowns and acclimated cel aggregates to determine if membrane permeability was altered by freezing. The NMR water signal decay consisted of two exponental c ets: a short one arising from extracellular water, and a long one arising from intracelular water. A slow fr...
